Maybe it’s a dark and stormy night. Maybe you’re in Minnesota and you had to plug in your car because it’s too cold outside for car engines and humans alike. Or, maybe, you’re just in Pheonix in July.
Whatever the case, outside isn’t an option and it’s time to get some rest and relaxation in. But we all know that “fun indoor activity” often translates to “I feel awful about myself after spending an hour on instagram” or “I just binged Netflix all weekend.” What are some fun indoor activities for college students that will leave you feeling fulfilled and ready to face the challenges of studying without breaking the bank? Here are some ideas.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 1: Play a Board Game
Grab a friend (or 5) and set up your favorite board game or pitch in to get a new one for the group to share! Board games are great value-for-money because they can be played over and over again. A few favorites? Pandemic, Dominion, Ticket To Ride, Marvel: Legendary, and King of Tokyo.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 2: Bake!
Grab some ingredients and a measuring cup and try your hand at chocolate chip cookies, snickerdoodles, a cheesecake, or a pavlova. You’ll end up (hopefully) with a delicious result and it’s a lovely break from the headiness of studying to be in the kitchen, mixing ingredients.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 3: Turn boring chores into a fun competition
Come up with a cleaning olympics for yourself and your roomates. Who can dust the most in 30 seconds? Can you sweep the dorm room in less than 2 minutes? Cleaning is definitionally a chore… but make it fun so that you actually enjoy yourself. Maybe you can even put together a trophy to give the winner?
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 4: Learn to Knit
This one has a bonus benefit: you can also knit during boring classes if you don’t need to take notes. It also allows you to make gifts, which is handy for the budget, and it’ll make you feel so amazing when you figure out how to cable knit a scarf for your mom. Knitting has actually been shown to have meditative properties because of the repetition of the movements. So do something good for your brain and learn to do something with yarn! If you’re not wanting to spend oodles on fiber, you can try shopping at your local thrift store. Michael’s also always has good coupons available, so you can get yarn at a really good rate if you’re willing to buy one ball at a time.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 5: Bath Bomb.
Grab a magazine, a fun novel, or a podcast to listen to, put in a bath bomb and have a relax. Enjoy the break that comes from nice smells, warm water, and some mind-candy. Just as a PSA: make sure no one you live with has sensitivity to smells before you aromatherapy your dorm room or apartment.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 6: Host a Clothing Swap
Whether it’s the Freshman 15, changing taste, or just boredom, it’s really nice to get rid of old clothes and it’s even more fun to spice up your wardrobe with new offerings. So have some friends over and lay out the clothes you’d each like to swap. Who knows, you may find a new favorite! Anything that isn’t swapped can be given to charity or donated at a thrift store.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 7: Go hunting for seasonal decorations at your local thrift store and then deck the halls
So you’re suddenly a college student who isn’t at home, enjoying the pumpkins that always grace the front porch in autumn, or the Santa that sits on the countertop each December. Bring some of that cheer to your new digs by getting yourself to a thrift shop and picking up a few things – and then get decorating! Be sure to put on the music that you love to listen to at whatever time of year it is.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 8: Find an Artistic Outlet
My sister doodles, my brother-in-law writes comics, my good friend does calligraphy. Try your hand at art for a bit and enjoy letting your creativity flow into something that isn’t the thesis statement for another essay. If you’re feeling out of ideas you can even get a book of drawing prompts to try.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 9: Volunteer
Get out and spend time with people who aren’t in college. Maybe you could help out at a local senior’s center with the bingo hour, or serve soup at a soup kitchen, or be a tutor to local high school students. Whatever your interest, find a way to turn that into a means of giving back. You’ll enjoy the break from campus life and the stresses of college.
Fun Indoor Activity for College Student Idea 10: FaceTime a family member
Your Nana would love a phone call. So make a cup of tea, put on your jammies, and prepare to have a nice chat together. She’ll be so glad you made time for her and you’ll be glad you connected with her. I know I sound like a know-it-all right now… but it’s honestly so worth it.
